Retro Tech: Hyperconnectivity

How did we all get so hyperconnected? I’m taking a look at where it all started - the simple phone - and how things developed. How we went from answering machines to AOL messenger to Facetime. But I’m also taking a look at where it’s all going; and I’m looking at tech that will one day allow us to communicate telepathically.

I was briefly on AIM, I was mainly on Yahoo Instant Messenger. But how I got my friends was through social media websites like Black Planet, Myspace, Crushspot, Mocospace, Tagged. THOSE WERE THE DAYS! Ain't nothing like web camming it up to a friend from 600 miles away.

Problem with Communication via though is that it's difficult to keep your mind from drifting or spontaniously thinking things that you don't really want to say. Perhaps you could think with commands, something like "quote Hi mom I'm doing fine! endquote" And everything you think that are not whithin quotes won't be transmitted? I feel like opening my mind to someone else like that would make me feel more naked than actually being naked. I'd really like to have full control with a tool like that. I'm not sure but I feel like an actual pure mindreading tool is something that would probably only be used in policework and/or by the military if we ever get there.

It's amazing how the concept of the smartphone was never really given much serious discussion 30 years ago. It makes me wonder if there is technology that will be as prolific as the smartphone in the future that we are overlooking.

I really wish they did a quick stop on mIRC or IRC hahah, those days were so wild for me. Also wish they mentioned how w AIM and early social media people would like, graffiti their handle on the bus and stuff and you could meet people randomly like that, there were sooooo many ways to meet random people but it was a bit different because you couldn't tell anything about them without talking to them. Like they didn't usually have a profile or anything you just had to talk to them to see if they were cool or not

When AIM replaced the initial AOL instant message it was a game changer because it integrated image sharing through messages. This inevitably led to ubiquitous cultural phenomena like memes, selfies, and something I was a super early pioneer of (for better or worse) - the “filter”. I had a serial-connected Connectix QuickCam, a few design apps like (a very much bootlegged) PhotoShop 3.1, Kai’s Power Tools and Macromedia Painter, and would just go to town on my pics (just called pics. Selfie wasn’t a word yet)... adding layers of color to the greyscale images, throwing on weird text or stupid sarcastic captions, or just drawing some strange setting to make the otherwise kind of boring (yet still awesome) 16 shade greyscale 160x120 pixel QuickCam pics look more like a statement than a snapshot. I’ve still got some OG “filtered” pics from 1995-1998 I made before escaping to art school and eventually getting acquainted with a proper digital camera. AOL and AIM was the Wild West in the 90s and early 2000s, it was kind of awesome because everything about the internet was so new and otherworldly compared to now where it’s almost totally integrated with everything we do. The QuickCam and the Color QuickCam were certified dope.

Always look back in the past to get educated.. often times we take things for granted and that also limit our imagination of what the future could be.

With telephone u didnt have to get out of your house and meet someone to talk to them, just call them. With computers and smartphones u dont have to speak to communicate with someone, just type it out. Now with this nextmind device u dont even have to do anything, just think about it. All the improvements in technology always makes us do less. Soon when everything is replaced with robots and tech, whats even the purpose of human life?

  • Stephan Doiron

I find Marques to be monotone and tedious to listen to at the best of times but to watch this series where he reviews old tech with a mostly modern filter is just a non starter for me. Was looking forward to the nostalgia trip but the last few videos I've watched have been mostly a big yawn. Didn't even make it 5 minutes into this one.

If I could have something that allows me to send a message to someone else through brain to brain contact but there isn't a business involved, I'd be all for it. But you know Verizon or Google or Facebook will want to be involved so they can listen in for advertisement purposes.

Psalm 24 1 The earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. 2 For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods. 3 Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who shall stand in his holy place? 4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. 5 He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. 6 This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob. Selah. 7 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. 8 Who is this King of Glory? The Lord strong and mighty, The Lord mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of Glory shall come in. 10 Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah.
