I love that he mentioned the software on tractors, it's such a bs system . Like idc if you like red or blue if we change that we can help many people that spend all their dimes and pennies on these utilities that are being fished back by companies that won't admit they are grabbing your purse by your neck.

Why don’t the companies just produce the parts separately for retail sale? That way consumers still get to keep their device and save money, and the companies can make money off of the parts they sell

Or, if you're Apple, you just update everyone's device: Remember, it's a software "feature" that makes your phone operate more slowly to offset problems due to an aging lithium ion battery. They're looking out for all of us, and filling their pockets with cash. I no longer support Apple, I'd rather buy Samsung and support the Korean, Brazilian, Indonesian, and Taiwanese economies rather than the one that gave us covid (Samsung products no longer made in China post 2019).

Probably because they don’t want to see how easy it is to make these products and replicate or to make products better. I bet they make it nearly impossible to see everything so companies don’t copy. I’m just guessing I’m not sure.

It shouldn't be up to the company that sells the product to decide if the modification is safe or not. There is Government institutions to decide that. Not TESLA OR APPLE ETC.....

funny , I remember a 3rd grade repair shop loser made fun of me when I missed up the screen connector in my ipad , of course I didnt repair it in that shop and ended up fixing it by myself :) I have zero compassion with those guys and I dont care if apple crushed them because they are basically leaches that feeds on hiding information . Yah I can read the wikihow page better than you and fix my own ipad without giving u a dime , heck I will do it for fun just to spike you .

I don’t understand… how come when car manufacturers like BMW and Mercedes does it for many years already it’s ok, no one complains. But when Apple does it it’s such a big issue…. As far as i know there are more Apple products users than there are BMW users. So they do have a right to maintain quality

Saying that we don't have the "right to repair" because tech is getting more complicated is a big fat lie... The safety excuse too... Aaand the envionmental excuse too... The only reason they don't let you repair is they want even MORE money... And that's the only reason I never again will use an iPhone... Not only they are getting more and more expensive, at some places the average person can't even afford an iphone from half a year of salary, and now you get less and less, no accessories no cheap repair if something goes wrong...

Isn’t that the same with any product? The company would like for no one to know how it’s made so on so forth, but once you release to the public it’s fair game for the public to figure that out is it not? (Aside from reproducing)

To be fair, the same could be said for any combustion automobile and many cars have batteries that are just as capable of and frequently do cause fires and casualties. It isn't the Right-To-Half-Ass-Repair its the Right-To-Repair. Any unreasonable modifications or incorrect repairs could still void your factory coverage, to at least the same ends as regular auto makers Tesla could provide the same level of reasonability. Same goes for PCs and Phones, compare Apple to Dell, Dell allows and even sells parts and provides documentation for repairs without any specific trick to "VOID" a factory warranty. Compare Apple to a phone brand like HTC where HTC readily sells and allows LCD and battery replacements. Their excuses siting "safety" fall apart quickly when looked at objectively.

So as I've always experienced it, you can repair your stuff, though the warranty will be done for if you do. Normally its hard to get the proper parts for a repair but if you're handy you can make it work most of the times. Improvisation is the key. I think it is wrong being more of less forced to buy new instead of repair and companies repair services should be more accessible.

I understand Tesla restricitng modification since it's a car, you can literally harm and kill, not just yourself, but anyone if anything goes wrong with the modification. Phones on the other hand.. Apple is blatantly stopping third party repair from happening but with all the "technicalities" they are able to get away with it.

Great topic, well executed! Thnx for brining this to our attention. One more thought on your last point, companies invest so much on great engineers because they want to make everything more integrated, not just for the product to work better, but also to be more complicated to be repaired. I don't see any problem with a phone battery being removable, and can be easily done by the companies, but they give no proper explanation why that can't be done except maybe "waterproofing".

Next time please mention the software aspect of right to repair such as with iOS Jailbreaking. Apple should not be allowed to dictate what iOS version the end user desires to install on her iPhone or iPad (assuming it’s a compatible version with the device). For example, my old iPhone 7 ran much better on iOS 12 than it did on iOS 13, however, Apple’s signing servers prevents my to install iOS 12 today. If the end user prefers his or her experience on an older software then it should be their discretion to live with an outdated and less secure system software or not.

I don't want to stifle innovation by telling a company that they can't make any engineering choices that would prevent an amateur from repairing their device easily. I just replaced a battery on my macbook(the only time I've ever had a rechargeable battery fail btw) and was surprised at just how complicated the process was. That being said, if I have the skills to repair my owned tech, there is absolutely no reason why a company should punish me for it.

Are you people f** stupid? Did you forget already about modular phones? Look up the reasons they didn't work. It's analagous to why right to reparir wouldn't work. It's mind boggling how some people with technical background can defend this cause. It seems like no one has any ideia of how manufacturing of modern electronics work.

Okay, doesn't explain why to put a software-based restriction on hardware changes. Also i doubt that each part has a special processor which requires a configuration unique to the phone.

I have an example, I work in the geek squad and today a client had a phone that TMobile would let him return even though he had bought it the previous day, and it wouldn't turn on. We had a whole unit in stock for his exact make and model but apple wouldn't allow that even though it is covered under the MFW. It kept forcing a rear system replacment. And I when I told apples systems that we can't even run diags on it to even know if a rear system would work, it wanted us to send it to them. Apples rules keep putting AASPs in a spot to where we have to disappoint clients way too often.

Safety isn't an argument. I can go out and operate a dangerous tool tomorrow, and my safety would be my responsibility. Someone could get hurt working on a Tesla, but someone could also get hurt working on a conventional car

Why wouldn't you be able to photo copy money?... What if you are trying to teach your kid how to count money and count change they were given back?... we live with this layer of Authoritarianism that we have acclimated to... Why are we not discussing the fact that we allow Corporations and our governments; entities that are socially accepted because of their utility to utilize us to take power form us...

I tried to repair my modern Colt revolver. I even agreed to void my warranty if they sent my the replacement part. They still warned me against it through because "our revolvers are a bit more complex than a S&W". I went ahead though. The part arrived a couple of weeks later and it fit into place absolutely perfectly. A few hours went by and I suddenly heard a pop come from my unloaded firearm...as it was just sitting there lol. A piece that was next to the one I had replaced broke. I called Colt and explained everything. They laughed and ended up repairing my gun for free, despite my previous agreement to void the warranty in exchange for the part. I know that firearms are entirely different than smartphones, but yeah. I learned my lesson lol. If a company begs me to just send them the product instead of attempt my own repair, I tend to believe their reasoning now.

I used to repair Nintendo DS’s for my friends and family at age 11 here in DR… It was literally like playing with legos. That would be impossible with the modern devices we have today. That says a lot about the direction things are going. But I hope it changes!!!

It’s really inexcusable to be against the rights to repair, basically any industry where knowledge around the subject progresses continuously those that work in it generally have to keep updating their knowledge, probably also having to take recertification’s and tests
